Copy an Existing Configuration
The Copy an Existing Configuration feature allows you to duplicate an existing product configuration—including all of its category groups, items, pricing, and display settings—onto a different Shopify product. This is useful when you have a similar product that shares most or all of the same configurable options, saving you from rebuilding the configuration from scratch.
Prerequisites
- You must have an existing configuration open in the Configuration Editor.
- The configuration must contain at least one category group with items.
- The target product must be a Shopify product marked as configurable (settable in the Metafields section of a Shopify product) and must not already have a configuration assigned to it.
How to Copy a Configuration
Step 1 — Open the Copy Modal
- From the Configuration Editor page, locate the Copy Configuration button. It appears in two places:
- In the Category Groups toolbar at the top of the groups section.
- In the Save / Cancel card at the bottom of the page.
- Click Copy Configuration to open the copy wizard.
Step 2 — Choose a Target Product
The modal opens to Step 1: Choose Target Product.
- Browse the list of available products, or use the search bar to filter by product title.
- Each product displays its title, vendor, status, and handle for easy identification.
- Products that already have a configuration assigned are automatically excluded from the list and will not appear.
- Click on the product you want to copy the configuration to. This advances you to the next step.
Note: If no products appear in the list, it means all configurable products in your store already have configurations assigned, or no products have been marked as configurable.
Step 3 — Select Groups to Copy
The modal advances to Step 2: Select Groups to Copy.
- A blue info banner confirms the target product you selected (e.g., "Copying to: Product Name").
- All category groups are selected by default. Each group is listed with its name and item count (e.g., "Processor Options (5 items)").
- Use the checkboxes to select or deselect individual groups. You can also use the Select All and Select None buttons to quickly adjust your selection.
- The primary action button at the bottom of the modal displays the count of groups you are about to copy (e.g., "Copy 3 Groups").
- If you need to choose a different target product, click the ← Back button to return to Step 1.
Step 4 — Execute the Copy
- Once you have confirmed your group selections, click the Copy N Group(s) button.
- A loading spinner appears while the configuration is being copied.
- When the copy completes successfully, the modal closes and you are automatically navigated to the Configuration Editor for the newly created configuration on the target product.
What Gets Copied
For each selected group, the following data is duplicated to the target product:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Category collection | The collection (group) assignment |
| Category sort order | The display order of the group |
| Show Info / Notes | Group-level info toggle and notes text |
| Required Category | Whether the group requires a selection |
| Display settings | Show description, show image, image width, show SKU, use radio buttons, multi-select |
| All items in the group | Each item with its price, wholesale price, sort order, default selection, and price override flag |
| Quote-only override | The global quote-only override setting |
Important Considerations
- One-time copy: The copy is a one-time duplication. After copying, the source and target configurations are completely independent—changes to one do not affect the other.
- Existing configurations excluded: You cannot copy to a product that already has a configuration. If you need to replace an existing configuration, delete or archive the existing one first.
- At least one group required: You must select at least one group to proceed. An error message will appear if you attempt to copy with no groups selected.
- Plan limits: Copying creates a new configuration, which counts toward your plan's product limit. If you are at your plan limit, the new configuration may be saved as archived.
- Pricing is copied as-is: All item prices (including overrides and wholesale prices) are duplicated exactly. Review and adjust pricing on the target product after copying if needed.
